2025 Military Clothing Allowances

If proper clothing is not provided, military personnel may get a clothing allowance to help cover uniform and other clothing expenses. On October 1, 2024, the following allowances for the fiscal year 2025 go into effect. Clothing allowances come in four varieties.

Four Types of Military Clothing Allowances

• Initial Clothing Allowance

When officers and enlisted personnel initially report for service, they are given a uniform allowance.

Clothing Replacement Allowance
The expense of uniform replacement is covered by an annual allowance given to enlisted military personnel. The length of service determines what you get.

Extra Clothing Allowance

Extra clothing allowances are solely available to enlisted members and have no bearing on or alteration to regular clothing allowances. They pay for the price of particular uniforms needed for particular jobs.

Clothing Maintenance Allowance

The monthly Coast Guard clothing maintenance allowance is exclusively available to enlisted Coast Guard personnel.

Initial Clothing Allowance

Initial Clothing Allowance for Officers

Clothing allowances are given to military officers just once. After they have served at least 14 days of active duty or active duty for training while in the Reserves, completed 14 periods of inactive-duty training as a member of the Ready Reserve, reported for the first period of active duty as a member of the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program, or first reported for active duty for more than 90 days, they are eligible to receive the clothing allowance.

Initial Clothing Allowance for Enlisted

Enlisted military members qualify for an initial clothing allowance when they first enlist and after special qualification. The majority of the initial clothing allowance is issued in-kind, as clothing. See the table below for the cash amount that is given to new service members.

Cash Clothing Replacement Allowances

Every year during the anniversary month of their first allowance, enlisted soldiers of the U.S. military are given a clothing allowance. The purpose of this allowance is to replace uniforms due to normal wear and tear.

Allowance for Basic Clothing Replacement

Following six months of active duty, the Basic Clothing Replacement Allowance is provided annually for the following two years.

Standard Clothing Replacement Allowance

The Standard Clothing Replacement Allowance is provided at the conclusion of the service member’s anniversary month and starts after three years of active duty.
